Species at boneyard creek

The boneyard used to be prone to major flooding and damage in Champaign-Urbana, especially on campus. Causes of flooding included rapid runoff, limited channel capacity, and the fact that the storm sewers had outlets on 3rd street. The flooding caused structural and business losses, with damage costs up to $1,500,000. In 1993, the flooding was so detrimental that the university was shut down. Ultimately, the people of C-U wanted change. The project was officially select in 1976 and the boneyard commision was formed. Citizens contributed to the planning of the project by giving  suggestions and comments. Their feedback helped form the master plan which was finalized in 1978. Not only does the plan control flooding, it also makes the boneyard a beautiful part of the community that everyone can utilize.
